Program Overview

University College Cork

University College Cork is a registered charity with the Charities Regulatory Authority.

Research Centres, Institutes and Projects

The university has various research centres, institutes, and projects, including the Planning and Management Tools for Biodiversity in a Range of Irish Forests project.

Planning and Management Tools for Biodiversity in a Range of Irish Forests

This project aims to develop planning and management tools for biodiversity in Irish forests.

Objectives

The objectives of this project include:

  • Examining the differences in lepidoptera diversity and abundance between native and plantation forests
  • Investigating the relationship between woodland vegetation and structure and lepidoptera species assemblages
  • Identifying compositional and structural indicators of lepidopteran biodiversity
  • Comparing lepidoptera assemblages among areas with closed canopy and open canopy

Methods

The methods used in this project include light trapping to sample moths in forest study sites.

Findings

The findings of this project indicate that there is no evidence for an influence of oak or Scots pine on the arthropod fauna where they are included as a secondary component in Norway spruce plantations. Lepidoptera communities were similar in species richness, assemblage structure, and presence of habitat specialists among the forest types.

Publications

The project has resulted in several publications, including:

  • Oxbrough, A., French, V., Irwin, S., Kelly, T.C., Smiddy, P. & O'Halloran, J. 2012. Can mixed species stands enhance arthropod diversity in plantation forests? Forest Ecology and Management, 270: 11-18.

PhD Research Project

A PhD research project is available to study lepidopteran diversity in native and plantation forests.

PhD Student

The PhD student will work under the supervision of Prof. John O'Halloran and Dr. Tom Kelly.

Project Description

The project will examine the lepidoptera diversity in native and plantation forests in Ireland.
