Overview & Curriculum

UCC is Ireland's premier research institution and home to many of the country's major national research institutes. This culture of research and critical thinking is fostered in our students. Medical students at UCC engage in research from the beginning of their student years and receive structured teaching in research methodologies. All students complete a research project during their final two years.

Teaching and Learning

Medical students at UCC have the opportunity to do clinical electives in hospitals in Ireland and in renowned international institutions. The medical school also organizes an ERASMUS elective programme for third year students in Lille in France. A large group of third year students travel to Africa every year on the Surgeon Noonan programme, where they bring much needed medical supplies and money collected by fund-raising events throughout the year. These electives allow students experience a different healthcare system and work in many of the world's top medical institutions.

Student Research

Students can choose a variety of research-based topics as their student selected module. All students complete a student research project during their final two years and many students present their work at national and international meetings and publish their research in peer-reviewed publications. Each year, UCC medical students are frequent recipients of undergraduate research scholarships.

Electives

UCC has an excellent record in student performance in the US Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs) and achieves some of the country's highest scores. The medical school at UCC provides a test bank, teaching support, and test exam practice for students sitting these exams.
