Program Overview


Department of Communication

The Department of Communication offers a range of programs for students to explore the field of communication.


Undergraduate Program

The undergraduate program in Critical and Creative Media requires 33 hours. All majors are required to take the following:


  • Either COM 102: Debate and Advocacy or COM 110: Public Speaking
  • And the student's choice of one additional COM class at the 200- or 300-level
    • Total of 6 hours

CCM Major Requirements

The CCM major core curriculum includes:


  • COM 120: Introduction to Critical and Creative Media
  • COM 319: Media Ethics, COM; COM 359: Diversity in the Media; or COM 371: Feminist Media Studies
  • COM 320: Media Theory and Criticism
  • At least one production course elective
  • Five electives from the core Critical and Creative Media curriculum
  • At least five classes must be at the 300-level
    • Total of 27 hours

Film Studies Concentration

Students wishing to earn the Film Studies Concentration must take the following:


  • COM 120: Introduction to Critical and Creative Media
  • COM 312: Film History to 1945
  • COM 313: Film History 1945 to Present
  • COM 320: Media Theory and Criticism
  • And two production courses

Honors in Critical and Creative Media

Highly qualified majors are invited to apply for admission to the honors program in Critical and Creative Media. To be graduated with the designation "Honors in Critical and Creative Media," students must have a major GPA of 3.8 or above prior to entering their final semester, declare for honors by the week before the last add/drop date, select a paper or creative project to work on at an advanced level, secure a faculty member to advise the scholarly or creative project, and submit the final version of the project to the Honors Committee for acceptance.
