Program Overview


Italian Studies Program

The Italian Studies program at Wake Forest University is an interdisciplinary course of study that explores the language, literature, history, and culture of Italy.


Program Requirements

A semester in Venice or another approved course of study in Italy (or summer program at Middlebury, Vermont) is required.


  • ITA 212: Exploring the Italian World (3 hours)
  • or ITA 213: Introduction to Italian Literature
  • ITA 319: Grammar and Composition (3 hours)
  • Select three courses from the following groups: (9 hours)
    • I. Literature
    • II. Fine Arts
    • III. History and the Social Sciences
    • At least one course from each of Groups II and III is required.

  • ART 245: Art and Architecture of the Roman World (3 hours)
  • ART 268: 16th Century Art in Italy: Magnificence and Reform (3 hours)
  • ART 269: Venetian Renaissance Art (offered in Venice) (3 hours)
  • ART 396: Art History Seminar (when topic is Three Italian Masters) (4 hours)
  • MSC 121: Music History and Culture I (3 hours)
  • MSC 122: Music History and Culture II (3 hours)
  • MSC 123: Special Topics in Music History & Culture (3 hours)

III. History and the Social Sciences

Graduation Requirements

To graduate with a Foreign Area Study in Italian Studies, students must contact the Registrar's Office during the spring semester of the senior year to request that a transcript copy be sent to the Italian Studies Director for approval.
