Program Overview

Introduction to the Mechanical Engineering Program

The Mechanical Engineering program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of mechanical engineering. The program is divided into three areas: scientific foundation, engineering foundation, and specialized mechanical engineering.

Program Structure

The program is structured into three years, with each year focusing on a specific area of study.

  • First Year: Scientific Foundation
    • Students receive a foundation in basic subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, and technical drawing.
  • Second Year: Engineering Foundation
    • Students are introduced to more engineering-specific subjects, including electrical engineering, materials and metallurgy, technical physics, applied mechanics, and structural and fluid mechanics.
    • The scientific foundation is completed with mathematics and physics.
  • Third Year: Specialized Mechanical Engineering
    • The final year is dedicated to concluding the study of basic engineering subjects and addressing more specific topics such as machine design, fluid machines, production technologies, and industrial plants.
    • The study plan is completed with two elective subjects and a final exam, which can also be related to an internship carried out in a company or activity in student teams.

Learning Methods

The program offers two courses, one in Italian and the other in English, with the same subjects, allowing students to switch between the two without any educational debt.

  • Courses are held through frontal lessons, classroom and laboratory exercises, and include activities conducted autonomously or organized in work groups.
  • Students can participate in the design and realization of prototypes with student teams, also to compete in international university competitions.
  • If desired, students can carry out an internship activity in a company.
  • It is possible to follow part of the teachings abroad, thanks to two projects:
    • PoliTong with China: Students have the opportunity to follow the third year in English together with Chinese students at Tongji University in Shanghai, combining study with teachings of Chinese language and culture. If, after graduation, students decide to attend an additional semester at Tongji University, participating in laboratory and research activities, they will also be recognized with the title of first-level Chinese degree (Bachelor of Science).
    • SEC with the USA: The agreement is signed with a network of Universities in the Southeast of the United States (SECAC) and allows students to spend the first semester of the third year in the USA. American students, on the other hand, come to the Politecnico di Torino in the second semester.

Additional Information

The access to these initiatives provides a selection process given the limited number of available places.
