Program Description

The training to become a psychotherapist in Austria is regulated by the Psychotherapy Act (PthG) and traditionally takes place in extracurricular institutions whose so-called specializations (FS) have been accredited by the relevant federal ministry. It is sensible and important to establish a connection to the Medizinische Universität Wien (MedUni Wien), which can ensure mutual scientific and clinical fertilization of psychotherapy and medicine. However, psychotherapy cannot be understood solely as a sub-discipline of medicine, as it is based in part on other, namely heuristic epistemological paradigms and therefore also has its own theoretical and empirical research tradition. These paradigms of knowledge and research complement biomedical approaches, generating synergy effects.

The Universitätslehrgang Psychotherapie: Psychoanalytische/ Psychodynamische Methoden (ULG-PPPM) is offered by the MedUni Wien in cooperation with accredited extracurricular training providers, so-called specialization providers (FS providers) from the field of psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy. The MedUni Wien provides the academic framework and offers scientific training in the field of psychotherapy research up to the master's thesis. The FS providers bring expertise in the area of specialized theory of the respective psychotherapeutic direction as well as in terms of practical training to become a psychotherapist.
