Program Overview
Medical Imaging PhD Programme
The Medical Imaging PhD Programme is a research-based program that aims to bridge the gap between basic and clinical science. It serves the common goal of developing and evaluating novel techniques for the image-based assessment and image-guided treatment of a wide spectrum of diseases.
Programme Overview
Medical imaging research is critical for advancing our understanding of physiologic processes and disease, encompassing the development of novel imaging markers and diagnostic approaches and their implementation in a clinical setting. Many different scientific disciplines are involved in this field of research, including, but not limited to:
- Radiology
- Nuclear medicine and radiopharmacy
- Biomedical engineering and medical physics
- Computer science
- Machine learning
- Image processing
- Radiation oncology
- Ophthalmology
- Psychiatry
Programme Structure
The PhD Curriculum (UN94) has a duration of 6 semesters (180 ECTS) and leads to a PhD degree. The program is designed to educate the next generation of scientists who are capable of critical thinking, deductive and logical analysis and reasoning, and ultimately, carrying out their own scientific projects in the area of medical imaging.
Programme Courses
The teaching language for the program is English (Level B2 and above). The program has a continuous intake, and the application and admission process is ongoing.
Costs and Financing
The program offers a PhD salary and funding, and tuition fees apply.
Research Areas
The program is associated with the Research Platform Medical Imaging (RPMI) of the Medical University of Vienna, which serves as the backbone of the PhD program. The research areas include:
- Development of novel imaging markers and diagnostic approaches
- Implementation of imaging techniques in a clinical setting
- Image-based assessment and image-guided treatment of diseases
- Multi-disciplinary approaches to medical imaging research
Programme Coordinator
The program is coordinated by a dedicated team, which provides support and guidance to students throughout their studies.
