Program Overview
Introduction to the Online Master's in Social Work Program
The Online Master's in Social Work (MSW) degree program at Texas Tech University provides a transformative learning experience for individuals aspiring to make a meaningful impact in their world. This program is designed for recent graduates, seasoned professionals, or those seeking a new career in a helping profession.
Program Overview
The Online MSW Program at Texas Tech University is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and graduates are eligible to sit for the Association of Social Work Board's (ASWB) national MSW-level practice exam and apply for licensure in most jurisdictions. The program focuses on promoting human health and well-being in micro, mezzo, and macro level systems by building effective partnerships with diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
Program Admission Tracks
There are two distinct program admission tracks:
- Online Advanced Admission: Ideal for recent graduates of a CSWE-accredited baccalaureate program in social work, students in this program track begin in the summer and can complete their degree in just one calendar year of full-time study.
- Online Standard Admission: Designed for applicants with undergraduate degrees in disciplines other than social work, students in this program track begin in a fall semester and can complete their degree in two years of full-time study.
Flexible Learning Schedule
The program offers flexibility to students with different needs, allowing them to attend as full-time or part-time students. Most of the curriculum is offered with an asynchronous modality, enabling students to mold study time to their schedule. Additionally, students have the option to drop-in during professors' real-time office hours and attend real-time meet-ups at least a few times each semester.
Limited Class Sizes and Access to Faculty
The Online MSW program offers optimal student-to-faculty ratios, providing every student with the opportunity to participate and receive personal attention from faculty. The faculty are experienced social workers dedicated to student success, readily available to offer guidance, support, and mentorship throughout the program.
Field Education
Applying classroom knowledge to real-world practice is a crucial component of social work education. MSW students clock hours at approved social service agencies throughout the curriculum, working alongside social workers and other professionals in their community while earning course credit. These structured and supervised placements allow students to observe daily activities of social work professionals, investigate the real-world impact of social policies, gain hands-on experience with active cases, and navigate ethical challenges.
Career Opportunities
With an MSW degree from Texas Tech, graduates are prepared to act in multiple professional roles, such as advocate, advisor, mediator, and supervisor, as well as community organizer, policymaker, and researcher. They can practice in a wide variety of diverse settings, including public and private hospitals, mental health clinics, corporations, schools, international and national charity organizations, and many other organizational settings that respond to human needs at local, regional, state, national, or global levels.
Challenges and Needs
Social workers intervene in various challenges and needs, including individual and family needs, community-level concerns, and macro-level challenges. These may involve issues such as housing, employment, parenting, elder caregiving, mental health, environmental hazards, employment opportunities, gun violence, water conservation, and social or economic justice.
Partnership for Further Education
Texas Tech's MSW program has a partnership with Angelo State University, wherein every year they will reserve up to 5 slots for automatic admission into their D.S.W. program for graduates of TTU's MSW program.
Conclusion
The Online MSW program at Texas Tech University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in social work, preparing them for a wide range of career opportunities and enabling them to make a meaningful impact in their world.
