The Welch Summer Scholar Program

The Welch Summer Scholar Program is a highly competitive summer research course for bright and talented high school students. The program lasts for 29 days and includes:

• Training in research skills such as microchemistry, literature searching, writing scientific papers, and keeping a scientific notebook
• Independent research under the guidance of a mentor
• Organized social events with significant faculty participation
• A scientific poster session, banquet with presentations of certificates, and submission of a formal scientific paper by each student

Program Details

The program is unique in that it has implemented novel chemical education concepts, including:

• An accelerated period with a capstone project relevant to chemical analysis, drugs of abuse, and their role in the community
• Learning modules focused on chemical entrepreneurship and the importance of science and engineering in the development of chemical technology
• A new undergraduate research program, "Chemistry In Your Pocket," supported by Texas Instruments
