Program Overview

The doctoral program in Exercise Physiology provides students with advanced knowledge about the integrative physiological processes related to how exercise and lifestyle changes alter health and risk factors for disease and disability. The doctoral degree requires 60 credit hours that include focused required coursework, seminar, electives, and 12 dissertation credit hours.


Admissions Criteria

  • A master's degree or higher in Kinesiology, exercise science, or a related field from an accredited institution with a strong graduate studies GPA.
  • Clear evidence of independent research experience (e.g., thesis, research project, peer-reviewed publication).
  • Curriculum vitae with evidence of academic achievements and relevant experiences.
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty mentors who can provide insights about the applicant's potential for success in a doctoral program. One letter must be from the student's major advisor during graduate studies.
  • One scientific writing sample, such as Master's degree research paper or copy of a peer-reviewed publication.
  • A one-page letter of intent describing academic preparation, interest in doctoral studies, professional goals, research skills, and teaching and work experiences. The letter should include a statement that confirms that the applicant has identified a faculty mentor in the department to supervise the applicant's doctoral studies.
