Hospitality and Tourism Management, Ph.D.

The Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in hospitality and tourism management (HTM) provides the competencies and confidence needed to teach, conduct research, and apply research findings in teaching in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Curriculum

  • A minimum of 60 hours past the master's degree must be completed.
  • Doctoral students must take at least 30 hours at OSU.
  • All requirements must be completed within 9 years and 4 years from the passing of qualifying exams.
  • No course on the plan of study may be more than 10 years old at the time of graduation.

Admissions

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has its own set of requirements for admittance, along with requirements for the OSU Graduate College. The requirements include:


  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Statement of purpose and goals.
  • Research Statement including research interests and several HTM graduate faculty members whose research matches the candidate's focus and who could potentially serve in an advisory capacity.
  • Resume or CV (should include such elements as education, research, industry, and teaching experience).
  • Official GRE or GMAT scores.
    • Recommended threshold for GRE: verbal - 150 or higher; quantitative - 147 or higher; analytical writing - 4.0 or higher.
    • For GMAT: verbal - 28 or higher; quantitative - 35 or higher; analytical writing – 4.0 or higher.
  • A minimum score of 79 on the internet-based TOEFL or a 6.5 on the official IELTS examination.
  • Successfully completed M.S. thesis and at least one college-level course in both research methods and statistics.
  • Two years of accumulative hospitality and tourism or allied industry experience is preferred but not required.
  • Candidates will be assessed comprehensively with respect to their academics, research, and industry experience, etc.
  • Initial contact with a potential faculty advisor is strongly recommended.
  • The application deadline is January 13 for the fall semester admission.

Cost & Assistance

OSU is a Research-Extensive University, and graduate students play a vital role in its teaching, research, and outreach missions. Doctoral students help finance their graduate education at OSU through employment as Graduate Research Assistants/Associates (GRA). The current Ph.D. assistantships include full tuition coverage and a financial stipend of approximately $25,000 per year on a nine-month basis, plus additional summer support of approximately $5,500 and partial student fee coverage. The total financial package is approximately $32,000 per year.
