Program Overview

NOT-koulu Program

The NOT-koulu program is a unique opportunity for high school students (2nd and 3rd year) interested in astronomy, physics, and natural sciences. The program is a collaboration between the University of Turku's Science Center, the LUMA Center of Southwest Finland, the Finnish ESO Center, and Finnish high schools.

Program Description

The NOT-koulu program offers an intensive experience in astronomical research, providing students with hands-on experience in conducting scientific research. The program includes:

  • Introduction to astronomy and software through self-study before the observation period
  • A two-day visit to the University of Turku, including lectures on observational astronomy and a night of observations at the telescope, conducted remotely
  • Data analysis and presentation of results in the form of a scientific report after the course
  • A trip to La Palma, where students will conduct observations at the NOT telescope

Curriculum

The program's curriculum includes:

  1. Introduction to Astronomy: An introduction to astronomy and the NOT telescope, as well as a search for observation targets.
  2. Astronomy Crash Course: A crash course in astronomy and preparation for observations.
  3. Remote Observations: Remote observations using the NOT telescope.
  4. Data Analysis: Analysis and presentation of observation results.

Schedule

The program schedule includes:

  • Introduction Lectures: Two introduction lectures, one on October 21st and one on October 28th, which will be held remotely.
  • Remote Observations: Remote observations will take place on October 31st - November 1st for Group 1.
  • La Palma Trip: The trip to La Palma will take place on November 4-11 for Group 2.
  • Final Seminar: A final seminar will be held online, where students will present their research results.

Participation

To participate in the program, students must register through the LUKEMA network. Registration for the remote observation school will open later.
