Program Overview


School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences

The School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences offers a comprehensive program in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, providing students with a foundation for graduate studies in speech-language pathology, audiology, or speech, language, and hearing sciences.


Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (BS)

The Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences program focuses on the development of communicative abilities, the anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying speech, language, and hearing, and the causes of communication disorders in children and adults. The program offers three areas of focus: speech-language pathology, audiology, and speech, language, and hearing science.


Program Description

The curriculum in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the processes and disorders of speech, language, and hearing. The program includes a sequence of core courses, followed by electives specific to the student's interests and career goals.


Degree Requirements

The Bachelor of Science in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences requires 120 semester credit hours, including:


  • 42 semester credit hours of Core Curriculum Requirements
  • 37 semester credit hours of Major Requirements
  • 42 semester credit hours of Elective Requirements

Core Curriculum Requirements

The Core Curriculum Requirements include:


  • Communication: 6 semester credit hours
  • Mathematics: 3 semester credit hours
  • Life and Physical Sciences: 6 semester credit hours
  • Language, Philosophy and Culture: 3 semester credit hours
  • Creative Arts: 3 semester credit hours
  • American History: 6 semester credit hours
  • Government/Political Science: 6 semester credit hours
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences: 3 semester credit hours
  • Component Area Option: 6 semester credit hours

Major Requirements

The Major Requirements include:


  • Major Preparatory Courses: 1 semester credit hour beyond Core Curriculum
  • Major Core Courses: 24 semester credit hours
  • SPAU Choice: 12 semester credit hours

Elective Requirements

The Elective Requirements include:


  • Free Electives: 41 semester credit hours
  • At least 41 semester credit hours of lower- or upper-division courses of the student's choice

Fast Track Baccalaureate/Master's Degrees

UT Dallas undergraduate students with strong academic records who intend to pursue a master's degree in Speech Language Pathology at the University may consider an accelerated undergraduate-graduate plan of study.


Minors

Students may also pursue a minor in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, which requires 18 semester credit hours, including 12 required semester credit hours of foundation coursework and 6 elective semester credit hours.
