Course Description

In this course, students develop their Finnish skills and deepen their knowledge of social issues related to Finnish working life.

Education Information

  • Introduction to Finnish society: social structure, rule of law, welfare and equality, power, influence and decision-making.
  • Working communities in Finland: employer's and employee's responsibilities, well-being of the working community.
  • Review of the basic level of the Finnish language (A2B1) and assessment of one's own skill level and planning for the development of language skills.

Course Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, students:


  • can discuss social phenomena and principles related to Finnish working life at a general level
  • recognize their own strengths as a user of the Finnish language
  • can draw up a realistic plan for developing communication skills in Finnish

Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

  • Multimodal teaching
  • Online contact teaching (Zoom meetings) and guided self-study
  • Lessons twice a week (18 h), discussion with the teacher and preparing for it (6 h) and self-study (32 h)
  • Moodle learning environment is used in the course

  • Suitable for advanced Finnish learners
  • The course is intended for international students and staff of all faculties of the University of Oulu
  • The course is also open to students outside the University of Oulu with a separate study right

Assessment

  • Assessment methods: Participation in contact teaching, independent work, completion of assigned tasks
  • Assessment criteria: To pass the course, students must attend class on a regular basis and complete group work tasks and homework assignments
