Integrated Beef Cattle Program

About the Program

Oklahoma has 1.6 million beef cows, yet many areas lack the veterinarians necessary to service the cattle operations, which reduces opportunities for rural prosperity and economic development. The shortage will likely increase as veterinarians retire and producer needs change. To counteract the problem, Oklahoma State University seeks to offer intervention strategies for rural sustainability by expanding veterinary skills and knowledge of herd health, food nutrition, forage management, reproductive management, and other common needs of beef producers.

Program Details

• The program aims to expand participants' veterinary skills and knowledge of herd health, food nutrition, forage management, reproductive management, and other common needs of beef producers.
• Practicing DVMs and current veterinary students will work side-by-side to foster networking connections and build lasting relationships while expanding their knowledge of beef cattle medicine, practice management, and more.
• The program is supported in part by a USDA NIFA grant and Beef Quality Assurance grant.
• For Class IV, the program is limited to 25 veterinarians and 25 veterinary students.
• Class selection and notification will be completed in mid-December.
• After selection, there is a $300 non-refundable registration fee required for veterinarians. There is no charge for students.
• It is not anticipated that there will be any additional fees. Registration includes some meals and light refreshments.
• Approximately 40 hours of CE will be offered during the course of this program.
• Participants will be expected to fully complete assigned content and in-person sessions for program completion.

• 2-hour virtual meetings held once monthly in February, March, April, and June
