The Bio-data (AVOIN YO) program is a 5-credit course that focuses on learning coding and the basics of programming with R. The course is designed to be taken together with or after the course Data mining and data-based models and before eventual courses on data management.

Program Description

The program covers typical approaches to data structures in R. It is recommended that students have a background in molecular biology and biochemistry before taking this course.


Prerequisites

  • Esitietovaatimukset: It is recommended that this course is taken together with or after the course Data mining and data-based models and before eventual courses on data management. Molecular biology and Biochemistry courses should be taken before this.

Objectives

After completing the course, students will:


  • learn how to develop code, mostly by thinking how to frame questions in a way algorithms would give them an answer,
  • be encouraged to constructive co-operation with people from different backgrounds, developing (field-specific) language skills,
  • learn concepts of scientific integrity, especially in the context of data manipulation and presentation. Data used in the course are always open access,
  • learn to combine biology/biomedical sciences with mathematics and informatics,
  • learn to communicate theories, methods, and results digitally and effectively, with rigor but also understanding how user perception participates in data communication.
