Writing Fellows Program
About the Writing Fellows Program
The Writing Fellows Program pairs trained graduate-student writing fellows with faculty members to enhance the effectiveness of writing and writing instruction in undergraduate courses.
- The program began in 2004 and has since worked with over 5,200 students.
- The program is interdisciplinary in nature and has partnered with faculty in all four undergraduate schools.
- The program has employed M.A. students from various departments, including English, Philosophy, Teacher Education, and Romance Languages.
Benefits of the Program
The program has three-tiered benefits:
- Students benefit from conferencing, mentorship, and direct writing instruction with their writing fellow.
- Faculty benefit from direct interaction with the fellows and learn what types of writing instruction are most effective for achieving their learning goals.
- The writing fellows benefit, honing their teaching and conferencing skills as they prepare to teach in the FWS program.
Response to the Program
The response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive, with:
- 88% of students agreeing or strongly agreeing that conferring with writing fellows has improved their writing.
- 90% of students surveyed saying they would take another writing-fellowed class and would recommend their roommate or friend to do the same.
- All faculty members who worked with the program finding it to be a helpful resource for their course.
