Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Birth to 5) is a postgraduate course designed to provide a pathway to the Master of Teaching (Birth to 5). This six-month course is available for domestic students and can be studied online or in-person at the Bedford Park campus.

Entry Requirements

• Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification.
• Alternatively, applicants can hold a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care or equivalent and have a minimum of five years full-time equivalent work experience in an Australian early childhood setting with related leadership responsibilities.
• Additional entry requirements include completing a non-academic assessment task known as a Teaching Capabilities Statement to demonstrate motivation to teach, strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills.

Program of Study

• The course consists of 4 topics:
  • Early Childhood Philosophies, Pedagogies and Partnerships
  • Contemporary Early Childhood Curriculum and Pedagogy
  • Researching Play and Pedagogies
  • Making Meaning in the Expressive Arts
• Practical experience is integrated through case studies, reflective practice, and applied projects, preparing students for real-world applications in early childhood settings.

Career Outcomes

• Graduates can continue into Flinders' Master of Teaching (Birth to 5) and, after completion, will be eligible to apply for teacher registration.
• Potential occupations include:
  • Director, assistant director, or manager at an early learning centre
  • Childcare centre manager
  • Teacher in long-day care or early learning centre
  • Kindergarten or preschool teacher
  • Childcare educator

Fees and Duration

• The course duration is 6 months.
• Delivery modes include in-person (Bedford Park) and online.
• Availability is full-time and part-time.
• Start dates are in March.
• Annual indicative fees for 2026 are $2,368 (CSP) and $12,250 (FFP) for domestic students.
