Certificate in Jesuit Studies

The Certificate in Jesuit Studies is an academic program that promotes a deep, informed understanding of the spirituality, history, and leadership methods associated with the Society of Jesus and its apostolates.

This program offers a unique blend of immersion travel and online and on-campus courses, along with a concluding leadership seminar, to provide a distinctive experience for individuals desiring both a depth of knowledge and a set of leadership skills.


Program Details

  • The program is designed to develop a deep, informed understanding of the spirituality, history, pedagogy, leadership methods, and other aspects associated with the Society of Jesus and its apostolates.
  • Certificate students will draw from both historical and contemporary sources and be prepared as leaders informed with an advanced understanding of the heritage and vision of Jesuit leadership.
  • Students will have the opportunity to have experiential learning opportunities and an academic immersion in Spain and Rome to examine the historical and spiritual contexts for the foundation of the Society of Jesus.

Target Audience

This certificate program is designed for existing and emerging leaders in Jesuit institutions, schools, and organizations who want to foster an advanced understanding of the heritage and vision of Jesuit leadership. The program is open to Boston College graduate and professional students enrolled in a degree-granting program in any of the university's graduate or professional schools, as well as to non-Boston College students interested in receiving a certificate.


Course Offering

  • Certificate applicants must complete 5 of the approved courses for a total of 15 credits.
  • Participants may set their own pace for completing the program.
  • Students can begin the program in any semester.
  • Each of the courses, except the immersion course, is offered fully online.
  • All students must complete the hybrid immersion course to complete the certificate.

Program Structure

The program includes:


  • Immersion Course: An experiential learning and pilgrimage course that offers participants informed, scholarly direction and unique opportunities to critically examine the intellectual and spiritual foundations of the Society of Jesus.
  • Courses: The Certificate in Jesuit Studies program presents opportunities for participants to acquire a deeper understanding of the spirituality, history, pedagogy, and leadership methods of the Society of Jesus and its colleagues.
  • Leadership Seminar: Participants engage with each other and with visiting leaders to examine the distinctiveness of Jesuit leadership.

Benefits

The Certificate in Jesuit Studies program provides a distinctive experience for individuals desiring both a depth of knowledge and a set of leadership skills. Credits earned from the Certificate may also be applied towards a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Jesuit Education in a Global World.
