Student Guidance

Study Planner

A study planner will help students decide what topics to study and when. It is used as a guide to plan enrolment and complete the degree, alongside the program of study, ensuring all requisites are met.

Program of Study Overview

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence, a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study. The Graduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence requires 1 year of part-time study and can only be undertaken on a part-time basis. Not all topics are necessarily available each year.

Program of Study Notes

  1. This Program of Study serves as a suggested study plan. When core topics are offered in both halves of the year, students may enrol in these topics in either half of the year as long as requisites are met.

Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

Applicants must normally hold a degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution. Applicants who have completed a Bachelor of Information Technology; Bachelor of Computer Science; or a specialisation in Artificial Intelligence within the last 3 years from the date of commencement of the course are not eligible to apply. However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Assumed Knowledge

  • A high-school level understanding of mathematics and statistics. Students should be comfortable solving simple arithmetic or algebraic expressions and calculating statistical values (such as the average of a set of numbers).
  • The ability to operate a computer to perform basic tasks such as downloading and opening files, installing software, etc.

Aims

This award aims to enable students to:

  • Apply, adapt, and utilise artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to develop workplace solutions.
  • Analyse complex problems and scenarios from both a theoretical and practical perspective.
  • Draw on artificial intelligence tools and a range of different algorithms to develop solutions to problems using the most appropriate approach.
  • Exhibit a strong, practical understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply artificial intelligence tools to develop workplace solutions.
  2. Design and create integrated artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions to a broad spectrum of problem domains.
  3. Select, justify, and evaluate artificial intelligence approaches based on understanding of the technology and ethical implications.
  4. Analyse problems and explore scenarios from a real-world setting, creating appropriate solutions.
  5. Formalise and verify algorithms for correctness and performance with respect to a variety of metrics.
