Bachelor of Paramedicine

Overview

The Bachelor of Paramedicine is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. The course focuses on mastering patient care, assessment, and treatment, as well as leading emergency health care teams with confidence. Students will learn safe work practices and integrate their skills within the broader health care system, analyzing sociological, psychological, legal, and ethical aspects of paramedic practice.

  • Additional Information: The course offering is delivered with weekly face-to-face classes, requiring students to attend in person for compulsory practical activities and learning. Clinical placements with SA Ambulance Service across Adelaide and regional South Australia are also undertaken.

Program of Study

To qualify for the Bachelor of Paramedicine, a student must complete 108 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic. The program is structured over three years, with core topics in each year.

Aims

The course aims to:

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:


  1. Demonstrate a sound underpinning knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.
  2. Demonstrate competence at patient care through effective patient assessment, diagnoses, treatment, and evaluation of care provided.
  3. Direct an emergency health care team in a complex operation through effective leadership and communication.
  4. Apply principles of safe work practices in the environment of out-of-hospital care.
  5. Integrate paramedic practice within the broader context of health care.
  6. Analyze the sociological, psychological, legal, and ethical aspects of paramedic practice.
  7. Synthesize effective oral presentation skills and professional writing.
  8. Discuss the obligation for development of the profession and self through lifelong learning.
  9. Identify the link between evidence-based practice and clinical practice guidelines.
  10. Discuss the variations in paramedic practice across Australia and the World.
  11. Identify specific health care issues of indigenous people and outline strategies for effective delivery of care.

Student Progression Rules

Failure to complete the course within 6 consecutive years may constitute evidence of not meeting academic requirements. A student who fails the clinical placement component of any topic will receive a Fail grade for that topic and may be removed from a clinical placement for unprofessional behavior and/or unsafe practice.


Professional Accreditation and Recognition

The course is accredited by the Paramedicine Board of Australia for registration as a paramedic in Australia.
