Program Overview

University Program: Philosophy and Thought Sub-Program

The Philosophy and Thought Sub-Program at the University of Tsukuba's Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences is composed of three fields: Philosophy, Ethics, and Religious Studies.

Philosophy Field

The Philosophy field encompasses three approaches: Western Philosophy, Eastern Philosophy, and Philosophy of Science (including Modern Philosophy). Despite the differences in approach, the common goal is to foster strong thinking and creative conceptual skills by setting clear problems.

Ethics Field

The Ethics field consists of two areas: the history of ethical thought and ethical studies. The history of ethical thought covers modern and contemporary Western ethical thought, as well as Japanese ethical thought. Ethical studies include hermeneutics, philosophy of history, anthropology, moral theory, rights theory, normative theory, political philosophy, and communication theory, as well as current issues such as bioethics, cultural friction, and SDGs. Research in these areas must be grounded in a correct interpretation of the history of thought and a deep understanding of human existence.

Religious Studies Field

The Religious Studies field offers a broad range of methods, theories, and fields of study in religious research. It encompasses traditional religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Indian thought, as well as new religions and the relationship between religion and society. Research is conducted using methods from religious studies, religious history, philosophy of religion, and sociology of religion, with a foundation in literary research and an emphasis on fieldwork.
