Bachelor of Social Science/Bachelor of Laws (Honours)

Overview

The Bachelor of Social Science/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is a double degree program designed for high-achieving students who wish to undertake an extended level of study and research in Law. This program satisfies the academic requirements for admission to practice as an Australian lawyer and provides students with a broad, progressive legal education and a strong practical orientation to the law.


Admission

To be admitted to this program, students must meet specific criteria, including:


  • Completion of at least 160 credit points of law study
  • Demonstration of the likelihood of graduating with an Honours Weighted Average Mark (HWAM) of at least 70 at the time of graduation
  • Submission of a 'Nomination of Topics' form
  • Demonstration of satisfactory academic writing skills
  • Availability of a principal supervisor

Structure

The program requires the successful completion of 400 credit points, including:


  • 160 credit points of specified core law subjects
  • 10 credit points of Research Training Component
  • 20 credit points of Research Component
  • 50 credit points of LLB alternate subjects
  • A major in social science (chosen from approved majors) of 80 credit points
  • An 80 credit point core comprised of eight common core subjects

Sequence

The recommended sequence for full-time students is provided, with a plan of study grid for each year. Students must complete specific law and social science subjects, including a research component and alternate law subjects.


LLB Alternate Subjects

Students must complete 50 credit points of subjects from the list of Bachelor of Laws alternate subjects, which includes topics such as Advanced Family Law, Anti-Discrimination Law, and International Business Transactions Law.


Equivalent Subjects

Some subjects have been replaced or discontinued, and equivalent subjects are listed for students who may have passed these subjects in previous years.


Accreditation

Graduates from this program are eligible to apply to the Legal Profession Admission Board for admission to legal practice in NSW after undertaking prescribed practical legal training.


Inherent Requirements
