Undergraduate Certificate in Acting

Overview

The Undergraduate Certificate in Acting introduces students to the fundamentals of acting and performance. Students participate in intensive actor training workshops, developing movement and voice, and exploring performance methodologies. They also participate in collaborative, staged readings of theatrical texts. The practical components are complemented by critical studies, analyzing texts and methods in relation to their historical and sociological contexts.

Program of Study Overview

To qualify for the Undergraduate Certificate in Acting, a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study.

Program of Study Notes

This Program of Study serves as a suggested study plan. When core topics are offered in both halves of the year, students may enroll in these topics in either half of the year as long as requisites are met.

Aims

This course aims to:

• Introduce students to fundamental practices and methodologies in performance
• Provide opportunities for students to work collaboratively in acting workshops and staged readings of theatrical texts
• Allow students to develop critical analysis skills and independent research skills, as they apply to creative work

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Identify and critique major performance techniques
2. Critically analyze theatrical texts in context
3. Work collaboratively on staged readings of texts
4. Apply fundamental performance skills to existing performance texts
