Program Overview


Art - Media - Aesthetic Education (Bachelor)

The subjects Art and Art Education are taught at Bremen University within the context of a BA programme. Both area programmes are devoted to academic inquiry into historical and contemporary artistic products and processes, together with their theoretical and practical analysis and teaching.


Study Description

The central components comprise the traditional subject areas of the fine arts, encompassing painting, sculpture, drawing, architecture and arts and crafts/design. The geographical focus lies on the Occidental art of Europe and the USA. The field of media receives the same attention on the programme as the classical art genres. Students studying to become teachers (Lehramt) must participate in numerous artistic and medial projects.

Objectives and Contents of Program

  • Stages of study / curricula / description of modules: Students acquire a comprehensive knowledge of art history and genres, as well as media-specific knowledge of aesthetical products and works of art, how they originate, and the societal contexts within which they relate to other objects, product creations and stagings.
  • Major Fields: The focal studies/areas of specialisation comprise:
    • The history, present-day, and theory of the arts and architecture
    • The history, present-day, and theory of the media
    • Aesthetic education
    • Gender issues in teaching and research
    • Artistic and medial work practical (only students studying for 'Lehramt')
  • Practical: It is compulsory for students to undertake a six-week work placement, which is supervised by the field.
  • Study Abroad: Students are recommended to spend one semester at a university abroad during their foundation studies.

  • Possibilities for additional qualifications: To acquire the qualification to teach at state schools, students must subsequently obtain a Master of Education postgraduate degree (M.Ed), followed by an 18-month period of practice teaching in school, which ends with the second state exam for teachers in Germany.
