Specific Course: The art of Art Nouveau and the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt
Course Description
At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, a new movement emerged with Art Nouveau, which opposed the long-dominant principles of historicism. The characteristics of the movement included an anti-eclectic attitude, material appropriateness, and the use of flowing and vegetal elements.
The emergence of the Art Nouveau movement can be seen against the background of various historical developments (industrial revolution, arts-and-crafts movement, Japonism, etc.). In Germany, the artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt developed under the patronage of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig into a significant Art Nouveau center. In addition to an introduction to the topic of Art Nouveau, we will get to know the artists' colony and its protagonists (including Joseph Maria Olbrich, Peter Behrens) in more detail.
A significant Art Nouveau collection can also be found in the Landesmuseum in Darmstadt. The Neess collection in Wiesbaden also wants to be presented. With over 500 objects, it provides a cross-section of all Art Nouveau genres and exemplifies the diversity and quality of the artifacts. We will also take a look at Bad Nauheim, where a large Art Nouveau spa complex has been preserved. With its richly decorated bathhouses and ornately ornamented waiting rooms and decorative coffers, the Sprudelhof is one of the most impressive testimonies to German Art Nouveau.
