Program Overview
Intensive Japanese Course for Science and Engineering Students
The Intensive Japanese Course is designed for Japanese Government Scholarship students to learn Japanese before studying in graduate schools. However, international students of the institute may also apply for the course.
Eligibility and Priority
To be eligible for the course, students must meet the following criteria:
- Eligible language level in Japanese
- Research advisor's permission to attend everyday class
- Ability to attend all classes and events (absences and tardiness will not be tolerated)
- Course registration status within the prescribed number
Priority is given according to the following order:
- MEXT Scholarship-holders
- Full-time graduate/research students
Course Schedule
The course will take place from October 6, 2025, to January 30, 2026. Class hours are as follows:
- Monday to Thursday: 8:50-12:25
- Friday: 10:45-12:25 and 13:30-15:10
The course will be held face-to-face at the Ookayama Campus.
Levels and Acceptable Number of Students
The course will have the following levels:
- A class: 2-3 students (Basic 1: those who have not learned Japanese at all)
The textbooks used will be:
- Weekly J for starters 1 Dive into Japanese
- WEEKLY J book1 日本語で話す6週間
- Nihongo Active Talk: The First Japanese Textbook for Beginners
- どんどんつながる漢字練習帳 初級
Application Process
To apply, students must:
- Download the course application form
- Fill in the form and send it by email with a PDF attachment
The application deadline is October 3, 2025, at noon. Applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis, and students must pass a subsequent interview test to be accepted into the course.
Placement Interview
The placement interview will be held online, and the date will be announced to each applicant.
Others
International graduate students may obtain credits for their course degree. For master's students, 1 credit per quarter as #400 subjects, and for doctor candidates as #600. Those who cannot attend classes on every weekday or those who have already finished the pre-intermediate level may take Japanese courses for international graduate students.
