Program Overview

International Experimental and Clinical Linguistics - IECL

The International Master's Program Experimental and Clinical Linguistics (IECL) at the University of Potsdam is located at the Department of Linguistics.

Overview

The IECL program offers innovative instruction, combining linguistic knowledge with interdisciplinary research and an international orientation. It covers areas like language processing, language acquisition, evidence bases in language impairments, and multilingualism. The program equips students with the ability to critically evaluate studies, conduct empirical-experimental research, make in-depth analysis of statistical data, and interpret results. It has a special focus on statistics and is a research-based program. However, it does not equip students to work as speech and language therapists.

Program Details

  • Master of Science
    • Standard period of study: 4 semesters (2 years)
    • Credit points: 120 CP
    • Start of study (1st term): winter term
    • Language of instruction: English

Program Contents

The IECL provides an advanced academic training in research methodology in a flexible format and prepares students for a scientific career in the areas of psycho- and neurolinguistics. The program provides an intensive, research-based education with a specific focus on the neuro-cognitive mechanisms underlying language processing, language acquisition, their disorders, and their rehabilitation. Students can develop their own area of interest within a research framework of:

  • first language acquisition
  • speech and language processing
  • evidence-based practice in speech and language disorders
  • multilingual language acquisition and processing

Program Goals and Future Career Options

The IECL Master program qualifies students for scientific activities such as in research institutes or at universities, as well as for further scientific qualification (doctorate). In addition to that, students' excellent specialized knowledge and basic expertise in statistics also qualify them to take up professional activities in non-university fields where the investigation of topics of language acquisition, multilingualism, language processing, and evidence-based speech therapy research or the in-depth analysis of statistical data is required. Please note that the program does not provide basic training for working as a speech and language therapist.
