Program Overview

Introduction to the Licenciatura em Proteçăo Civil e Gestăo do Território

The Licenciatura em Proteçăo Civil e Gestăo do Território (LPCGT) aims to develop highly competent professionals in the fields of civil protection and territorial management. This undergraduate program offers a unique opportunity for higher education in Portuguese public universities, focusing on the formation of professionals with solid knowledge of concepts, strategies, instruments, and systemic vision inherent to civil protection and risk management functions within the context of territorial management.

Objectives of Learning

The program's primary objectives include:

  • Providing general education in foundational areas of Geography and Engineering, along with a systemic view of the course's formation area.
  • Offering in-depth knowledge of Civil Protection, enabling an integrated understanding of principles, agents, and technologies specific to the area.
  • Conducting studies in various aspects of civil protection and territorial management.
  • Preparing and undertaking field activities for analyzing and evaluating potentialities and conditionings of risk, nature, and methodologies for its assessment, and the history of emblematic civil protection accidents.
  • Learning contents and techniques that allow for the conception of Civil Protection programs, measures, actions, and projects, both in the realization of studies and projects and in emergency plans.
  • Developing planning and management capabilities in crisis or emergency situations.
  • Utilizing geographic information technologies and articulating them with other capacities.

Methodologies of Teaching

The teaching methodologies adopted in the course units develop competencies for analyzing and interpreting relationships between bio-physical, socio-economic, cultural, and political-administrative systems reflected in the territory. Class debates, text commentary and review, and written reports stimulate analytical, synthetic, and critical capacities necessary for understanding factors and processes that determine geographic dynamics. Case studies and practical exercises allow for consolidating and applying theoretical knowledge, systematically identifying data, methods, and techniques appropriate for analyzing specific themes, recreating situations close to the professional universe, and encouraging problem-solving capabilities. Special emphasis is given to mastering Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in support of analysis and decision-making. Transversal competencies, such as teamwork, time management, and the ability to communicate in different formats and to diverse audiences, are also developed.
