Criminology (CRIM) Program Overview

The Department of Sociology and Criminology offers a major leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminology. The Criminology BA provides marketable skills and knowledge that relate to crime prevention, law enforcement, and the court system.


Program Description

The program in criminology is comprehensive, adding the skills in research, theory, and data analytics that prepare students beyond an understanding of criminal procedures or evidence. This major will educate students in the complexities of criminal behavior and familiarize them with the justice system processes and the causes, correlations, and consequences of criminal behavior.


Requirements for B.A. in Criminology

The following credit hour requirements must be met:


  • State minimum core requirements: 35 hours
  • 37 credit hours in criminology (CRIM) and sociology (SOCI) courses:
    • CRIM 20003: Introduction to Criminology and Criminal Justice
    • SOCI 10103: General Sociology
    • CRIM 20403: Sociology of Criminal Law
    • CRIM 30203: Criminological Theory or SOCI 30203: Criminological Theory
    • CRIM 32003: Corrections and Social Control or SOCI 32003: Corrections and Social Control
    • SOCI 31903: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality
    • SOCI 33004: Social Data and Analysis
    • SOCI 33103: Social Research
  • 12 credit hours of Criminology (CRIM) or Sociology (SOCI) courses numbered 30000-level or higher
