Program Overview


Introduction to the Sturgis Fellowships

The Sturgis Fellowship is the oldest of the prestigious undergraduate fellowships at the University of Arkansas, established in 1986. Sturgis Fellows have a range of interests and pursue a variety of majors, interdisciplinary programs, and experiential learning opportunities in Fulbright College. They form a vibrant intellectual community and receive personalized support from the Fulbright College Honors Program staff and top faculty mentors.


Program Overview

As honors students, Sturgis Fellows excel in the classroom and beyond. They undertake cutting-edge internships, study abroad around the world, and join Arkansas faculty in pathbreaking research. As graduates, Sturgis alumni build fulfilling careers in all fields, including medicine, law, publishing, writing, consulting, software engineering, academia, sustainability advocacy, and business entrepreneurship.


Qualifications

Applicants must be incoming first-year honors students seeking a major in Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The Sturgis Fellowship is awarded based on a holistic review of written fellowship application materials, which include:


  • An essay
  • An analysis of three works
  • A list of activities and awards
  • Two academic references Applicants who are considered for a Sturgis Fellowship demonstrate:
    • Strong academic curriculum and performance, including ACT and SAT scores
    • Strong writing ability
    • A commitment to service and community engagement
    • Leadership potential
    • Intellectual curiosity and interest in creative pursuits
    • An interdisciplinary approach to academics and/or research

Application Process

All Sturgis Fellowship applicants will apply through the University of Arkansas Honors College. Sturgis finalists are selected from the larger applicant pool. Applications must be received no later than February 1st.


Notification and Award

Finalists will be notified at the end of March if they received the Sturgis Fellowship. A total of $80,000 is awarded for four years.


History and Support

The Sturgis Fellowship is supported by the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable and Educational Trust, commemorating the industry and vision of Roy and Christine Sturgis. The trust was created to provide scholarships for young people attending colleges and universities in Texas and Arkansas, recognizing the importance of advanced education.
