Program Overview

The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University offers thesis-based graduate programs leading to master of engineering (MEng) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Oil and Gas Engineering.

Program Details

For both computer and electrical engineering, students have access to a wide variety of engineering software for tasks, such as:

• Mathematical analysis (MAPLE and MATLAB)
• Electric circuit simulation (SPICE, PSPICE, electronics workbench)
• VLSI and FPGA design (Synopsys, Cadence and Xilinx)
• Software design (Rational Rose, Visual Paradigm and Microsoft development tools)

Special facilities include:

• The Instrumentation Control and Automation (INCA) Centre
• The Computer Engineering Research Laboratories (made up of the Centre for Digital Hardware Applications Research, the Software Engineering Research Laboratory, the Multimedia Communications and Remote Sensing Laboratory, the Computer-Aided Design Laboratory for Analog and Mixed Signal VLSI Systems)
• The Advanced Wireless Communications Research Laboratory (AWCRL)
• The Power Devices and Systems Laboratory In addition, research facilities from industrial and government collaborations are available.

Research Areas

At Memorial, you may pursue Oil and Gas Engineering graduate studies in a wide variety of areas, including:

• Reservoir Engineering
• Drilling and Production Engineering
• Petroleum Engineering
• Natural Gas Engineering
• Energy Systems Engineering

Degree Requirements

• The MEng program normally takes two years to complete and students are required to complete at least four courses, a seminar course and a thesis.
• The PhD program usually takes three to four years to complete and comprises two courses beyond the master's level, completion of comprehensive examinations and a significant research thesis.

Admission Requirements

• To be considered for admission to a MEng program, the minimum requirements will normally be a second-class degree in an appropriate area of study from a university of recognized standing.
• To be considered for admission to a PhD program, the minimum requirements will normally be a Master's degree from a university of recognized standing, in an appropriate area of study.
