Program Overview

The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University offers thesis-based graduate programs leading to master of engineering (MEng) and doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering. The program includes related fields such as hydrodynamics, marine structures, underwater vehicles, and ocean environmental engineering. It is renowned for its unique approach, diverse research projects, and exceptional faculty, which includes top researchers.

Program Details

The Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering program at Memorial University is the only one of its kind in Canada. Graduate students have access to a 58-metre towing tank and a structures laboratory with cold rooms and specialized testing equipment, and are provided opportunities for field work and graduate research projects. Memorial University's Ocean Engineering Research Centre (OERC) is involved in research, development, and consultation in most areas of ocean engineering, including the offshore petroleum and shipping industries. Activities within the OERC include scale model experiments, numerical modelling, software development, and structural testing.

Research Areas

Graduate studies in ocean and naval architectural engineering can be pursued in areas such as:

  • Marine hydrodynamics
  • Marine structures
  • Underwater vehicles
  • Arctic engineering
  • Ocean environmental engineering
  • Offshore safety
  • Marine simulation

Degree Requirements

  • The MEng program normally takes two years to complete and students are required to complete at least four courses, a seminar course, and a thesis.
  • The PhD program usually takes three to four years to complete and comprises two courses beyond the master's level, completion of comprehensive examinations, and a significant research thesis.

Admission Requirements

  • To be considered for admission to a MEng program, the minimum requirements will normally be a second-class degree in an appropriate area of study from a university of recognized standing.
  • To be considered for admission to a PhD program, the minimum requirements will normally be a Master's degree from a university of recognized standing, in an appropriate area of study.
