Program Overview
Art 2403 | Sculpture Survey
The Sculpture Survey course is an introduction to the basic concepts, materials, and processes of sculpture by exploring modeling, casting, carving, and constructing.
Course Projects
The course includes several projects that allow students to explore different concepts and techniques in sculpture. These projects include:
- Passage: This project explores the idea of passage, which can be either a place or an act, or both at once. Students are asked to create a sculpture that interprets the concept of passage in a literal or abstract way.
- Bodies: Surface and Structure or Skin and Bones: This project pairs wood and a soft, pliable material to create structures and surfaces that explore the idea of body. Students are asked to utilize wood and an additional soft material, and to engage with the idea of body as it relates to the tradition of sculpture.
- Permanence, Power & Presence: This project explores the concept of "monument" through various casting processes. Students are asked to create a "monument" that reflects power and presence, and to consider the meaning of permanence in relationship to monuments and memorials.
