Discipline Introduction

Sociology is the scientific study of human society. Specifically, sociology is a discipline that systematically and comprehensively investigates social groups, social behaviors, social relations, social institutions, social culture, social change, and social development. As one of the core components of social science, sociology encompasses nine sub-disciplines in mainland China: Theoretical sociology, applied sociology, demography, anthropology, folklore, social policy, social work, social psychology, and gerontology.

The Department of Sociology is affiliated with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). Its predecessor is the Department of Sociology and Political Sciences. In 2004, the Sociology Teaching and Research Unit (STRT) was founded. In 2009, STRT evolved into the Department of Sociology. It has remarkable achievements in the fields of teaching, research, social services, and international exchange.
