Program Overview

Introduction to the Cycle Pluri-disciplinaire d'Etudes Supťrieures

The Cycle Pluri-disciplinaire d'Etudes Supťrieures (CPES) offers a unique program in Modťlisation and numťrique en sciences de la vie, which aims to train specialists in biology with complementary skills in numerical methods (mathematics and computer science) to address the challenges of science in the era of massive data in genomics, proteomics, ecosystem studies, and more.

Program Description

The program combines a solid foundation in biology with an introduction to mathematical and numerical methods essential for modern biology. The core concept is "modťlisation," a scientific approach that translates a concrete situation into a problem expressed in mathematical language, which can be rigorously analyzed using computer or mathematical means.

Specialization

The specialization is progressive:

  • The first year introduces all domains of biology in parallel with mathematics and computer science teaching.
  • In the second year, students choose between a profile focused on and or a profile focused on the study of mťcanismes du vivant.
  • In the third year, students continue in the profile chosen in the second year (while maintaining quantitative methods teaching): biodiversitť et ťcologie or mťcanismes du vivant. Additionally, students in the latter profile orient themselves towards a more specific domain among numerous possibilities (plant biology: cellular, molecular, and biochemistry; microbiology; neurosciences).

Projects

The teachings of biology and numerical methods over the three years of CPES are accompanied by projects, starting from the first year. These projects are autonomous works, realized by students alone or in small groups of two or three people, which span several weeks. Under the supervision of a teacher, students conduct their own documentary research, develop a computer program, or carry out an experiment to compare it with the predictions of a theoretical model.

Why Choose CPES?

The CPES Modťlisation et numťrique en sciences de la vie is a unique training in France, which combines professors from preparatory classes and high school and teacher-researchers from the university. The small group of students (30 to 35 in core courses, 12 in most specific courses in the life sciences path in the first and second year) benefits from close monitoring within the high school and links with the research world provided by the university.

Research Areas

The program focuses on several research areas, including:

  • Genomics
  • Proteomics
  • Ecosystem studies
  • Biology
  • Mathematics
  • Computer science

Conclusion

The CPES program in Modťlisation and numťrique en sciences de la vie offers a comprehensive education that combines biology, mathematics, and computer science, providing students with a unique set of skills to address the challenges of modern biology. With its progressive specialization, project-based learning, and close supervision, this program is an excellent choice for students interested in pursuing a career in biology and related fields.
