University Program Information

Introduction to the Program

The University Department of General Medicine offers a program for students to obtain the Diploma of Specialized Studies in General Medicine (DES of General Medicine).


Program Requirements

To validate the DES of General Medicine, students must:


  • Complete the training stages which includes:
    • 1 outpatient internship with a general medicine practitioner (1 outpatient internship with a general medicine practitioner)
    • 1 emergency course
    • 1 child health course
    • 1 adult medicine internship
    • 1 women's health course
    • 1 Outpatient Primary Care Internship in Supervised Autonomy (SASPAS) (1 outpatient primary care internship in supervised autonomy)
  • Complete teachings which include:
    • All obligatory teachings
    • 2 chosen teachings per year
    • 1 professional project teaching
    • 6 GEPT (Tutored Practice Exchange Groups) during the winter, 1 to 2 GEPT during the summer per year of internship
  • Complete and validate the Portfolio with the tutor

Thesis Requirement

Students must also:


  • Support their Thèse (thesis)
  • Be validated by the DES Commission at the end of the deepening phase

Specific Requirements for Earlier Promotions

For promotions up to and including a specific year, students must:


  • Complete the internship model which includes:
    • 1 adult medicine internship
    • 1 emergency course
    • 1 Gynecology/Pediatrics internship (1 gynecology/pediatrics internship, either outpatient or hospital-based)
    • 1 outpatient internship with a general medicine practitioner (1 outpatient internship with a general medicine practitioner)
    • 1 internship in a university hospital (1 internship in a University Hospital, except in exceptional cases with a waiver from the DES coordinator)
    • 1 internship of 6th semester by choice (SASPAS, consultation internship, etc.)
  • Complete teachings which include:
    • Theoretical teaching seminars
    • 6 GEPT per year of internship
  • Presentation and support:
    • Their thesis in General Medicine to obtain the Doctor of Medicine diploma
    • A DES dissertation in General Medicine to obtain the Diploma of Specialized Studies in General Medicine
