Program Overview

3D SOUL: Technologies of Three-Dimensional Printing in Energy, Sustainability, Reverse Engineering, and Rehabilitation

Program Description

The 3D SOUL program is designed to provide specialized training in three-dimensional printing and scanning technologies, with a focus on energy, sustainability, reverse engineering, and social support applications. The program is implemented by the Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamics and Refrigeration Technology of the School of Mechanical Engineers of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and leverages the long-standing experience of the academic and research staff in cutting-edge areas such as sustainable energy, inclusive education, and support for people with disabilities through 3D technologies.

Program Objectives

The program targets various professional groups, including:

  • Engineers, technicians, and industrial designers seeking to acquire knowledge and skills in three-dimensional printing and scanning applications for industrial use.
  • Graduates of pedagogical schools and educators in primary and secondary general education, special education, and vocational training interested in integrating 3D technology into the educational process.
  • Healthcare professionals, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation professionals looking to delve into 3D technologies for designing and creating customized printed aids.
  • Executives of organizations, companies, and social bodies aiming to integrate 3D technologies into their services and products.
  • University students and postgraduate students interested in specialization, practical training, and future employment in cutting-edge areas of the modern job market.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the basic technologies, materials, and software of 3D printing and scanning.
  2. Design and develop 3D models for mechanical, medical, or social applications.
  3. Apply reverse engineering processes for redesigning, optimizing, or reusing objects.
  4. Choose materials with low environmental impact and apply principles of sustainable design.
  5. Connect technological innovation with social and educational fields.
  6. Formulate, develop, and document a complete project from idea to construction and evaluate its usability.

Educational Modules

The program consists of six educational modules:

  1. Introduction to 3D Printing & Scanning Technology: Basic principles, applications, and analysis of available technologies.
  2. Reverse Engineering and Digital Reconstruction: Scanning objects, creating 3D models in CAD, and analyzing errors and accuracy.
  3. Energy Applications of 3D Technology: Designing components and prototypes for energy systems, thermal resistance, and bio-materials.
  4. Sustainable Design and Circular Economy: Printing with recycled materials, design optimization for sustainable use, and strategies for circular production.
  5. Inclusion and Rehabilitation with 3D Technologies: Developing aids for people with disabilities, ergonomic models, and customized exoskeletons.
  6. Practical Training Laboratory & Final Project: Hands-on experience with 3D printers, scanners, and software, culminating in a final project based on a real problem or need.

Program Details

  • Duration: 2 months, totaling 50 hours of engagement.
