Overview
The Economics major at Baylor University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of economic principles, theories, and practices. The program is offered through the College of Arts & Sciences and requires a minimum of 33 semester hours to complete.
Requirements
To declare the Economics major, students must meet the following requirements:
- Have completed MTH 1321 Calculus I with a minimum grade of "C"
- Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
Transfer students must wait to earn a Baylor GPA of 3.0 or higher before declaring the Economics major.
Course Requirements
The Economics major requires 27 semester hours of coursework, including:
- Core Economics Courses:
- ECO 2306: Principles of Microeconomics
- ECO 2307: Principles of Macroeconomics
- ECO 3306: Intermediate Microeconomic Analysis
- ECO 3307: Intermediate Macroeconomic Analysis
- ECO 3347: Introduction to Econometrics and Data Analysis (or ECO 4347: Advanced Econometrics)
- Economics Electives: 12 semester hours of 3000- or 4000-level ECO courses, with at least 9 hours at the 4000-level
- Required Courses in Other Fields:
- MTH 1321: Calculus I
- One course from the following: STA 2381: Introductory Statistical Methods, STA 3381: Probability and Statistics, or QBA 2302: Business Data Analysis I
Additional Requirements
- Economics majors must earn a minimum grade of C in each of the core economics courses and MTH 1321.
- Students earning a C-minus or less in any of these courses may only retake the course once to meet the minimum grade requirement.
- Except for credit earned prior to initial matriculation at Baylor, students majoring in Economics must complete all core economics courses at Baylor; post-matriculation transfer credit will not count toward the major even if the student was not an Economics major at the time the transfer credit was earned.
Notes
- Qualified students may take ECO 1380 Introduction to Economic Analysis and Policy in lieu of ECO 2306 and ECO 2307, but doing so does not reduce the number of semester hours required for the major.
- ECO 3308 Engineering Economic Analysis does not count toward the Economics major.
