Program Overview
Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.)
The Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) degree is offered by the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University.
Overview
The B.S.W. program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in social work, preparing them for careers in a variety of settings, including non-profit organizations, government agencies, and private practice.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the B.S.W. program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Completion of SWO 2321 Introduction to Social Work, or its equivalent, with a minimum grade of "C" in the course.
- An overall GPA of 2.7 on a four-point scale and a grade of "C" or better in all social work courses.
- Submission of an application form, including an agreement to abide by the GSSW Student Code of Conduct and affirmation of the Code of Ethics as outlined by the National Association of Social Workers.
Program Requirements
The B.S.W. program requires a minimum of 124 hours, including:
- Basic requirements, such as English, history, political science, and religion.
- Major requirements, including courses in human diversity, introduction to social work, human behavior, and social work practice.
- Electives, such as social work research and data analysis.
- Practicum education, which includes two semesters of internship experience.
Practicum Education
Practicum education is a critical component of the B.S.W. program, providing students with hands-on experience in social work practice. Students must complete a minimum of 215 hours of internship experience per semester, for a total of 430 hours.
Foreign Language and Culture Requirement
Students must complete a foreign language and culture requirement, which can be met by taking courses in a modern foreign language, such as Spanish, French, or Chinese, or by completing a classical language, such as Latin or Greek.
Additional Cultural Competency Courses
Students may also take additional cultural competency courses, such as introduction to anthropology, cultural geography, or sociology, to broaden their understanding of diverse cultures and communities.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate, students must have a minimum grade of "B" in Internship I and II and a GPA of 2.7 or higher in the major.

Accreditation
The B.S.W. program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
