The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers various graduate programs, including the Ph.D. in Mathematics and the Ph.D. in Statistics and Data Science. These programs are designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in their chosen field.

Timeline for Degree Completion

The recommended timeline for completing the Ph.D. in Mathematics program is as follows:

• Take 6-9 graduate credits per semester
• Complete all three Qualifying Exams between the 2nd and 6th semester
• Secure a Dissertation Advisor and a Dissertation Committee, and begin formulating a dissertation topic, by the end of the 6th semester
• Complete the Program of Study form, confirm with Advisor, and secure Dissertation Committee signatures by the end of the 4th semester
• Complete the Oral Exam by the end of the 7th semester
• Begin the dissertation draft by the 7th semester
• Complete the dissertation draft, discuss with Dissertation Committee, and finalize the dissertation by the 8th semester
• Defend the dissertation by the end of the 10th semester

Forms Required for Graduation

The following forms are required to be submitted to the Graduate School during the progression to the doctoral degree:

• Declaration of Advisor/Major Advisor/Committee Chair: completed form must be submitted by the end of the student's 3rd semester
• Program of Study: completed form must be submitted by the end of the student's 4th semester
• Doctoral Degree Admissions to Candidacy: for doctoral students who completed all requirements except for the dissertation
• Graduation Application in MyNevada: must be submitted several weeks in advance
• Notice of Completion form: should be submitted after all requirements for the degree have been met
• Optional Exit Survey: to be completed upon graduation
