Program Overview

The Discover Reggio program is a transformative experience led by Jenna Dewar, M.S., CFLE, senior lecturer of Human Development and Family Science, in Reggio Emilia, Italy. This immersive journey invites students to explore their emerging professional identities in a setting that places human connection and meaningful work at the center of everyday life.

Program Description

Through guided reflection, site visits, and engaging conversations with educators and community leaders, students will examine how purpose and passion can shape a more intentional work-life balance. In Reggio Emilia, the environment itself becomes a teacher—modeling how communities can thrive when children, families, and well-being are genuinely prioritized. Students will see firsthand that professional excellence does not require sacrificing joy or wholeness, and that it's possible to contribute meaningfully to society while still feeling nourished and supported.

Key Experiences

This thoughtfully designed program blends cultural immersion, professional exploration, and personal reflection—all set in the inspiring context of northern Italy. Students will participate in the following key experiences:

• Loris Malaguzzi International Center: Engage directly with the philosophy and practices that have made Reggio Emilia a world leader in early childhood education.
• Remida Creative Recycling Center: Discover the innovative Remida, a cultural project that transforms industrial waste into educational resources, encouraging sustainable thinking, artistic expression, and a new perspective on how materials can support learning and imagination.
• Local Infant-Toddler and Preschool Visit: Observe firsthand how young children in Reggio Emilia are supported in environments that value collaboration, autonomy, and joy.
• Balsamic Vinegar Production Cellar: Learn about the centuries-old tradition of balsamic vinegar production in a family-run acetaia.
• Parmesan Cheese Factory Tour: Witness the artistry and precision behind Parmigiano-Reggiano, one of Italy's most iconic products.
• Bologna Day Trip: Travel to the historic city of Bologna, a center of intellectual and culinary heritage.

Program Details

• Duration: March 21-28, 2026
• Program Fee: $2,420 plus airfare (estimated $1,500 per person)
• Scholarships: Available for College of Education and Human Development students (no additional application required)
• Program Includes:

• Academic Credit: Student participants will have the option to receive academic credit through enrollment in HDFS 401: Independent Study (up to 3 credits, student is responsible for tuition and fees through the University of Nevada, Reno)

Eligibility Requirements

• Must hold a valid passport that will remain valid through March 28, 2026
• Must be eligible to travel to Italy
