Paramedical Essentials Program
Introduction
The Paramedical Essentials program is a rigorous paramedical training program offered through a partnership between the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (REMSA Health) and the University of Nevada, Reno, Extended Studies. This program results in a Paramedic Studies Certificate from the University.
Program Overview
The Paramedic Studies Certificate prepares participants for careers in emergency medical services, emphasizing communication skills, leadership, legal issues, documentation, and ethics. The program begins each January and August, with cohorts of up to 18 carefully selected students entering an intensive 12-month course of study leading to a certificate of completion and eligibility to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic (NREMT-P) exam.
Program Structure
The program includes a combination of:
- 581 didactic hours
- 228 clinical hours
- 480 internship hours of rigorous paramedical training necessary to prepare for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic Exam and to work toward becoming a licensed paramedic.
Didactic Phase
Didactic hours take place in the classroom and in various training facilities and labs, covering topics such as:
- Preparatory
- Trauma
- Medical emergencies
- Pediatrics
- OB-GYN
- Behavioral
Clinical Training
Clinical training entails 12-hour student rotations through:
- St. Mary's
- Renown Medical Center
- Northern Nevada Medical Center
- Various local clinics
Internship
In the internship portion of the program, students are placed with preceptors on an ambulance and work in phases toward becoming paramedics. Students are issued provisional licenses by the State of Nevada in this portion of the program, allowing them to act under the scope of a licensed paramedic responding to emergency calls in the field.
Tuition
The tuition for the Paramedical Essentials program is $9,000.00.
