Program Overview

Introduction to TRIO Programs

The TRIO Classic and STEM Scholars Programs are designed to support first-generation and/or income-qualified students or students with disabilities. These programs provide valuable resources and services to participants.

Definition of a First-Generation Student

A first-generation student is defined as an individual whose parents did not complete a baccalaureate degree. This definition is provided by the Department of Education. In cases where an individual regularly resided with and received support from only one parent, the definition applies if that parent did not complete a baccalaureate degree. Trade schools and community colleges do not count as a baccalaureate degree.

Income-Qualified Definition

The term "income-qualified" or "low-income individual" refers to an individual whose family's taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150 percent of the poverty level amount. Taxable income is distinct from gross income, and these amounts are listed separately on income tax forms.

Determining Income Qualification

To determine if an individual is income-qualified, they must compare their family's taxable income to the Federal TRIO Income Levels. This comparison is based on the number of individuals in the family and the corresponding taxable income.

Program Eligibility

To be eligible for the TRIO Classic and STEM Scholars Programs, participants must meet specific criteria. These criteria include being a first-generation student and/or income-qualified. Additionally, students with disabilities are also eligible for these programs.

Dependent or Independent Status

An individual's dependent or independent status is determined based on their FAFSA application. This status is used to decide whose taxes to submit for income verification purposes.

Tax Submission Requirements

As a federally funded program, 2/3 of program participants must be both first-generation and income-qualified. To verify income qualification, participants must submit a copy of their or their parents'/guardians' most recent taxes.

Special Circumstances

In cases where an individual's circumstances are complex, they may need to submit additional documentation or seek guidance from the program administrators.

DACA Student Eligibility

Currently, DACA students are not eligible to apply to the TRIO Classic and STEM Scholars Programs. However, alternative programs such as the First In The Pack program do not have citizenship requirements.

Program Services

The TRIO programs offer a range of services and resources to support participants, including:

  • Peer mentors
  • Faculty resources
  • Academic support
  • Career guidance

These services are designed to help participants succeed in their academic pursuits and achieve their career goals.
