Introduction to the UNH-in-Greece Program
The UNH-in-Greece Program is a summer study abroad program that focuses on Greece from antiquity to the present day. This program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to study a variety of subjects, including history, politics, art, and music, in the city where democracy was invented.
Program Overview
The program is open to any undergraduate student at the University of New Hampshire who is interested in the long history of civilization in Greece. The program provides an intensive but invigorating introduction to Greece, and it is designed to serve both students with little background in ancient or modern Greek culture and those with more familiarity who wish to advance their knowledge.
Terms Offered
The program is offered during the summer term, specifically from late May through late June.
Application Deadline
The application deadline for the program is February 15.
Program Structure
The program provides many advantages, including:
- An introductory 1-week study/travel course that allows students to visit and learn in some of the most important sites in central Greece outside of Athens.
- The opportunity for students to live and learn in central Athens, with easy access to all the city has to offer.
- The ability for students to earn 10 credits in 5 weeks during the summer term.
- Courses that satisfy the Historical Perspectives Discovery category requirement and, depending on course selection, one additional Discovery requirement.
- The program is led by a University of New Hampshire faculty member who teaches, advises, and provides academic support.
- The partner institution, Hellenic American University, provides a full range of services and amenities.
Academics
The program is open to all University of New Hampshire undergraduates, and there are no specific prerequisites. Students take 10 credits of coursework, which includes:
- "A Walk Across Greece," a 3-credit intensive 1-week study/travel course during the first week of the program. This course is required of all students.
- CLAS 511: Special Studies in Greek History, a 4-credit University of New Hampshire course in Classics. This course is the centerpiece of the program and is required of all students.
- One additional 3-credit course taught by Hellenic American University faculty. Students will have a choice of several options, some of which are approved to satisfy Discovery categories.

Athens is the most important city-state in ancient Greek civilization and is famous for its influential architecture and art. The city is also the vibrant capital of modern Greece, offering a unique combination of antiquity and modernity. Athens provides an extraordinary location for on-site, experiential learning, with its rich history, cultural significance, and modern amenities.
Costs
The program fees include:
- Tuition for 10 credits
- A course fee that covers housing, planned program travel within Greece, excursion costs, and some meals
- Mandatory summer fees The program fees do not include:
- Airfare to and from Greece
- Books and course supplies
- Most meals
Housing and Meals
Student housing is included in the program fees and is arranged by the program. During group travel outside of Athens, students typically stay in modest, traveler-friendly hotels. In Athens, students stay in housing arranged by Hellenic American University, which may include a local boutique traveler hotel or private apartments. Students can expect to share rooms with other program participants and will have access to internet and be in close proximity to Hellenic American University.
Other Inclusions
In addition to the above, program fees also include:
- Comprehensive international travel insurance and assistance program
- All travel, accommodation, and other excursion costs associated with the 1-week study/travel course, as well as some group meals and excursions in Athens
- Pre-departure preparation by University of New Hampshire faculty and staff
- In-country support by the University of New Hampshire-in-Greece resident director and the staff of Hellenic American University
- In-country arrival orientation organized by Hellenic American University
