Program Overview


Programme: Bachelor of Drama [BDram] 4-year programme

The Bachelor of Drama degree is a four-year programme that consists of the existing number of regular modules for the standard three-year degree, in addition to five foundational modules in the first year of study. The first year of the programme offers foundational support in academic information management, writing and literacy skills, visual imaging, as well as competence in discipline-specific theory and praxis, which are crucial for entering drama studies.

This BDram degree is a four-year programme (extended curriculum programme) and consists of the existing number of regular modules for the standard three-year degree in addition to five foundational modules in the first year of study.


Admission Requirements

  • Achievement level: 4 for English Home Language or English First Additional Language
  • APS (Grade 11): 26
  • APS (NSC/IEB completed): 26
  • Additional requirements: Applicants must complete and pass an audition process.
  • To retain admission, students must obtain an APS of at least 26 in the NSC.
  • Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS.
  • Applicants currently in Grade 12 must apply with their final Grade 11 (or equivalent) results.
  • Applicants who have completed Grade 12 must apply with their final NSC or equivalent qualification results.
  • Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission.
  • Successful candidates will be notified once admitted or conditionally admitted.

Academic Literacy

  • Students with an achievement level of 5 or 6 or 7 for English Home Language or an achievement level of 6 or 7 for English First Additional Language or the foreign qualification equivalence as per the conversion table are exempted from ALL 110 and ALL 125.
  • Students who are not at risk in terms of their academic literacy are compelled to obtain at least 12 credits in language modules in other departments in their second year of study.
  • Students who are deemed to be at risk with an achievement level of 4 and below for English Home Language or an achievement level of 5 and below for English First Additional Language or the foreign qualification equivalence must register for ALL 110 and ALL 125 in their second year of study.

Promotion to Next Study Year

  • Students selected for the BDram four-year programme must pass all the modules at the end of the first year of study.
  • The registration of students who do not comply with this requirement will be suspended, and no readmission will be considered.
  • Students will only be promoted to the second year of study after successful completion of all the first-year modules.
  • From its second year (Curriculum: Year 2), the four-year (extended) programme is aligned with the first year of the mainstream BDram programme.
