Program Overview


Programme: BRadHons in Diagnostics

The BRadHons in Diagnostics is a postgraduate programme offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:


  • A BRad (or equivalent) degree with a weighted average of at least 60% at final-year level
  • A Bachelor in Technology: Radiography with a weighted average of at least 60% at final-year level
  • A National Diploma in Radiography and BRadHons bridging programme with a weighted average of at least 60%
  • Registration as a radiographer or a postgraduate student with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
  • Access to accredited, suitable training facilities
  • Research methodology passed at bachelor's level

Additional Requirements

All students must register for NVB 700 Research principles.


Examinations and Pass Requirements

The following rules apply to examinations and pass requirements:


  1. A year mark of at least 40% is required for admission to the standard examination in all postgraduate modules.
  2. Each paper written for the standard examination must be passed individually with 50%.
  3. There is one examination period for the standard examination in October/November and the supplementary examination in November/December of the same year.
  4. If a student fails the supplementary examination, the module must be repeated.
  5. A supplementary examination in a module is granted to a student if a student obtains a final mark of between 40%-49% in any module at the examination.

Pass with Distinction

The degree is conferred with distinction on a student who has obtained an average of at least 75% (not rounded) in all the modules for the degree.


Minimum Credits

The minimum number of credits required for the degree is 120.


Fundamental Modules

The following fundamental modules are required:


  • ANP 703: Anatomical pathology 703 (5 credits)
  • NVB 700: Research principles 700 (5 credits)
  • RAN 700: Radiographic anatomy 700 (20 credits)

Core Modules

The following core module is required:


  • RSK 700: Research report: Radiography 700 (30 credits)

Elective Modules

Students must complete 3 (three) elective modules from the list provided, with a total number of credits of 60. The elective modules are:


  • RAW 780: Quality assurance 780 (20 credits)
  • RAW 781: Image interpretation 781 (20 credits)
  • RAW 782: Computer tomography 782 (20 credits)
  • RAW 783: Magnetic resonance imaging 783 (20 credits)
  • RAW 784: Intervention 784 (20 credits)
