Programme: PhD specialising in Real Estate
The PhD specialising in Real Estate is a research-based degree that requires students to submit a thesis on a topic related to the field of real estate. The programme is offered by the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology, Department of Construction Economics.
Programme Information
- A master's degree is required for admission to studies for a PhD.
- A PhD student must submit a thesis that deals with a topic from the list of subject disciplines and research focus areas as stipulated by the relevant Department.
- The PhD degree is awarded on the basis of a thesis, and an oral examination may be required.
- Students must submit proof of submission of an article issued by an accredited journal, based on the research conducted for the thesis.
- The student must provide proof of advanced original research and/or creative work that makes a real and substantial contribution to the knowledge and/or practice of the discipline.
Admission Requirements
- All applications must be accompanied by certified full academic transcripts, a certified copy of ID or passport, and a research concept note.
- International applicants must submit a SAQA evaluation of their completed qualification, TOEFL or IELTS test results, and a certified copy of their passport.
- Admissions are subject to departmental admissions processes and are based on academic merit, prior work experience, and supervisory capacity.
- Proposed research studies must align with the research focus of the relevant department.
Minimum Admissions Requirements
- Master of Science in Real Estate degree or equivalent master's degree in an associated field.
- Master of Business Administration degree with an honours degree in either quantity surveying, construction management, or real estate.
- Master of Business Leadership degree with an honours degree in either quantity surveying, construction management, or real estate.
Examinations and Pass Requirements
The doctoral examination is compulsory and covers the content of the thesis as well as the sections of the field of study on which the thesis is based.
