Program Overview


Programme: MA specialising in Fine Arts

The research can be conducted by means of a dissertation, a dissertation and solo exhibition, or a dissertation and curated exhibition.


Programme information

The programme is offered by the Faculty of Humanities, Department: School of the Arts. The minimum duration of study is 1 year, with a total of 180 credits at NQF level 09.


Admission requirements

General Admission Regulations:

  • All applications must be accompanied by certified full academic transcripts, a certified copy of ID or passport, and a research concept note.
  • International applicants must submit a SAQA evaluation of their completed qualification, TOEFL or IELTS test results, and a certified copy of their passport.
  • Postgraduate applications are subject to departmental admissions processes.
  • Admissions are based on prior degree performance, bridging arrangements, academic merit, and prior work experience.
  • The relevant department has the right to limit the number of students per year.
  • Complying with minimum admissions requirements does not guarantee admission.
  • Proposed research studies should align with the research focus of the department.

Minimum admissions requirements:

  • A relevant honours degree or a relevant four-year bachelor's degree, both at NQF level 8.
  • A weighted average of at least 65% for the honours degree or at final-year level of the four-year bachelor's degree.

Additional requirements

  • The Research Committee of the Department of Visual Arts must approve the application, which includes a research proposal.
  • The research can be conducted by means of:

    • A dissertation and solo exhibition
    • A dissertation and curated exhibition

    • Module content: A dissertation on an approved topic completed under supervision.
  • BKS 859: Dissertation and creative production

    • Module content: A solo exhibition of creative work accompanied by a dissertation of limited scope.
  • BKS 860: Dissertation and curatorial practice
    • Credits: 180.00
    • Module content: A curated exhibition investigating a relevant research theme, accompanied by a dissertation of limited scope.
