Programme: MTh specialising in Practical Theology
Programme information
The MTh specialising in Practical Theology offers students with a four-year BDiv, a BThHons or equivalent qualification, the opportunity of theological specialisation and research at master's level. The coursework modules provide the opportunity to acquire specialist skills in the practical field of the Ministry.
Admission requirements
- All applications must be accompanied by certified full academic transcripts from undergraduate to current level, a certified copy of ID or passport, and a research concept note.
- International qualifications must be submitted with a SAQA evaluation and TOEFL or IELTS test results if applicable.
- Admission is based on prior degree performance, bridging arrangements, academic merit, and prior work experience.
- The relevant department has the right to limit the number of students per year.
- Complying with minimum admissions requirements does not guarantee admission.
- Proposed research studies should align with the research focus of the relevant department.
- Applicants must be proficient in English and computer literate.
Minimum admissions requirements
- Relevant honours degree (at least NQF level 8) or relevant four-year bachelor's degree (at least NQF level 8)
- A weighted average of at least 65% at final-year level
Examinations and pass requirements
- A master's degree is conferred on a student by virtue of an examination, or an examination and a dissertation, or an examination and a mini-dissertation.
- Examinations can be written or oral.
- A subminimum of 50% is required in the examination, and at least 50% is required as a pass mark for the mini-dissertation or dissertation.
Research information
- A student must submit at least one draft article for publication in a recognised academic journal before or on submission of a dissertation.
- The draft or submitted article should be based on the research conducted for the dissertation and be approved by the supervisor.
- The supervisor is responsible for ensuring the paper is taken through all revision and resubmission processes.
Dissertation
- The proposed title, research design, and methodology must be submitted for approval to the Research and Ethics Committee via the supervisor and the head of department before commencing with the writing of a dissertation.
- The final title must be approved by the Postgraduate Committee and submitted to the faculty board for notification before submission of the thesis for examination.
Pass with distinction
- To pass with distinction, at least 75% for the dissertation must be obtained.
- The degree must be completed in the minimum prescribed period with a maximum of one additional year allowed.
